Major Focus
Our laboratory is dedicated to studies on neural control of the circulation and respiration, with emphasis on the synaptic transmission of the cardiovascular and respiratory reflexes in the correspondent areas in the dorsal and ventral aspects of the brainstem and in the spinal cord. We are using several experimental approaches such as awake rat, chronic intermittent hypoxia, working heart-brainstem preparation, brainstem slices and patch clamp technique. All of these methods are used for a better understanding of the synaptic transmission between neurons of the brainstem involved in the generation and modulation of the sympathtetic and respiratory activities. Special interest is dedicated to the coupling between these two important neurovegetative functions.
Leni G.H. Bonagamba
Leni G.H. Bonagamba was the researcher assistant in charge of the laboratory of Professor Benedito H. Machado from 1989 to 2016. She was a very active researcher in the cardiovascular field with fine expertise to study the role of the central nervous system in the regulation of the cardiovascular system. Leni published several papers and contributed very much to the training of all students and investigators in this laboratory for 27 years. Leni died on November 26, 2017, and since January 29, 2018 this laboratory is named Leni G.H. Bonagamba in honor of her great contribution to many physiologists.
